Redesigning Your Space to Make it Your Own

Kari Seibert - exerpt from Home & Garden supplement written in 2011: Posted on January-10-13 11:17 AM

With spring just around the corner, when doing your spring cleaning why not redesign your space? Redesign is the art of transforming a home by editing, rearranging, and utilizing the things you have collected over the years, without necessarily having to buy new.

Sometimes it’s as simple as changing the paint color. You can create a space that is balanced and harmonious while reflecting your personal taste without having to spend a lot of money. Look at your space through the eyes of a new guest in your home. Does your home reflect you and your personal sense of style? With today’s busy world your home should be a space that is warm, welcoming, and relaxing.

  • Here are some things you can do to create that space you’ve always wanted:
  • De-clutter. Pick a closet,or a room, and keep it simple. A project at a time so you don’t become overwhelmed. Try using this rule of thumb when de-cluttering, if you haven’t used it in a year, sell it, donate or throw it away. Use decorative boxes or baskets to hold unattractive items like magazines, papers and gaming devices. Place these on shelves in a de-cluttered book case.
  • Change the paint color in a room. It takes an afternoon and is an affordable way to change the look, feel and atmosphere. Pick a color you like and can live with for awhile, try the browns, blues or grey the “new neutral”.
  • Want to be bold with color? Do it with your accessories, i.e.:area rug, throw pillows, towels and drapes, that way it's easy to change when you grow tired of the look.
  • Remember a cohesive room has 3 colors. Try this rule of thumb, the 60, 30, 10 split. Use approx 60% (main room color), 30 % for that complimentary color and the final 10% for the unexpected hit of color, something that gives your room that "wow" factor.

Redesigning Your Space to Make it Your Own

Most IMPORTANT RULE when decorating,

go with your natural instinct, colors you tend to wear or gravitate to can be your inspiration or starting off point, maybe its a painting or rug that you love.

REMEMBER EVERY SPACE is individual to those using it, there are no hard and fast rules, GO AHEAD GIVE IT A TRY, have fun with your space, you will be glad you did.

Still unsure? Then call a redesign specialist, we listen and have the ability & vision to create for you the room you've always wanted.
